Queensland’s communities rally for the homeless
Vinnies hosted Community Sleepouts for locals to raise vital funds to support people facing homelessness and awareness of the impact of homelessness for some in their local communities.
The first West Brisbane Sleepout was held at GPS Rugby Club in Ashgrove on 22 June, which raised almost $30,000 to directly support people pushed to the margins of society. The event welcomed Hon. Kate Jones MP as the official Ambassador of the night’s proceedings. The evening’s higher fundraiser was Father Stanley Orji of Jubilee Parish.
On the Sunshine Coast, the Community Sleepout welcomed 90 participants who were able to raise a record $50,000 that will directly support people facing the impact of disadvantage. Despite the blustery cold on the evening of 25 June, participants braved the beach by the Maroochydore Surf Club. Congratulation to the highest fundraising team, Sunshine Coast Business Council.
On the banks of the broadwater in Southport on the Gold Coast, dedicated locals ventured to sleep rough in the open at The Southport School once again and raised $75,000. Funds raised will be dedicated to their new Homeless Support Centre to offer a much needed hand-up to locals facing the uncertainty of not having a safe place to sleep.
